"My Town" is a poetic tale about the residents who live in a solitary housing block which stands on the outskirts of a mining town. The feelings of helplessness, despair, and powerlessness associated with high unemployment set the scene for the film and permeate its atmosphere.
The main character, 25 year old Gozdzik, has been living in this housing block since birth. Gozdzik does not work and he does not study. His only distraction from the greyness of everyday existence is his playing for the local hockey team.
Gozdzik's family, and the other inhabitants of the housing block, are a colourful assemblage of comic yet tragic personalities who are trying their hardest to exist in this forgotten place. Gozdzik's father recently lost his job and now spends all of his time fishing in a lake, even though he has not caught anything in a long time. Gozdzik's mother does her best to maintain the warmth and unity within her family. Leon is a likeable old man who is completely besotted by Jola, the local beauty. Mrs Kurkowa is an elderly woman obsessed by her looks and just as obsessed by plastic flowers and kitch faiance figurines. There are also the Dabrowski brothers who are bored and disaffected and always on the lookout for trouble. Gozdzik's best friend Cichy lives in a small house next to the block. Cichy's days are spent restoring an old car in his garage which is the only memory he has of his absent father. He dreams of leaving "My Town" and taking his sick mother to a better place.
The resident's lives are turned upside down when Gozdzik's Uncle Janek unexpectedly arrives in town and his cheerful personality brings rays of sunshine into their world. The monotony of everyday life is soon forgotten as they spend their time laughing, joking, and spending time around the bonfire. A beautiful girl named Zosia, who embodies all the splendour of the world, moves into the block and exposes the possibilities that lie just beyond the horizont...
The setting of "My Town" is an Upper Silesian town which is dotted with abandoned mines and bankrupt foundries. This town is located in an economically depressed area which has the highest unemployment in Poland. It is within this milieu that the attendant social problems of unemployment are examined and brought into a stark and sharper focus, where its impact on interpersonal relationships is portrayed, and where the essence of the human soul is explored. Ultimately, "My Town" is a perceptive reflection on the ability of ordinary people to cope with the sometimes hopeless, despairing, and monotonous aspects of life in their own extraordinary way.
"My Town" is a film of complexity where the true colours of life burn through the greyness that obscures our vision. In the words of the screenplay writer and director Marek Lechki: "My aim was to explore how ordinary people - in quite extraordinary ways - comprehend and engage with the complexities inherent in their everyday lives." |
